新発見の月のクレーターに「ナム・ビョンチョル・クレーター」と命名=韓国の大学研究チーム
Newly discovered lunar crater named ”Nam Byung-chol Crater” by Korean university research team
The Danuri Magnetic Field Mounted Facility Research Team of the Department of Space Exploration at Kyung Hee University reported to the International Astronomical Union that they discovered a unique magnetic field on the far side of the moon through internationally-cooperative research.
The association announced that it had applied to name the unnamed crater after the name of a Joseon-era astronomer and mathematician, Nam Byeong-chol. After a final review, the association decided on the 14th to rename the crater "
The new crater was named "Nam Byeong-chol Crater." This is the first time that a crater on the moon has been named after a scholar from the Joseon Dynasty, after a proposal made by South Korea.
The crater has been given a name. The Kyung Hee University research team, working with scientists from the University of California, Santa Cruz, USA, who also participated in the study, decided to give the crater a name.
The research team was conducting research into changes in the magnetic field on the moon's surface caused by the impact energy that occurs when craters form, and Nam Byung-cho
The Nam Byungchol Crater was one of the subjects of the study. A Kyung Hee University official said, "The Korean lunar probe 'Danuri' conducted observations in low orbit and discovered the Nam Byungchol Crater.
"Further observations will likely lead to new research."
