South Korean military conducts ”Dokdo defense drill” in ”secret” - South Korean report
On the 21st, the South Korean military conducted a closed-door "East Sea (Sea of Japan) territorial defense training," also known as the "Dokdo (Long Islands, Japanese name: Takeshima) Defense Training."
A South Korean military official said on the same day about the training, "The military regularly conducts training every year.
"The East Sea Territorial Defense Training has been carried out in the past," he said, adding, "The East Sea Territorial Defense Training this time is also a training to protect our territory, people and property.
The South Korean military is planning to hold one more drill this year in line with its policy of conducting territorial defense drills in the East Sea twice a year.
The "Dokdo defense drills" were first conducted in 1986 and have been held twice a year since 2003. This latest drill is the fifth since the Yun Seok-yeol administration took office.
The South Korean military has previously actively publicized its "Dokdo defense drills," including releasing photos of Marines landing and Air Force fighter jets being deployed.
However, since the Yoon administration took office, the surveys have been carried out on a relatively small scale and in secret.
This reflects the current administration's focus on improving Japan-Korea relations and promoting Japan-US-Korea cooperation.
On the other hand, whenever South Korea conducts a "Dokdo defense drill," Japan repeatedly asserts through diplomatic channels that "Takeshima is an inherent part of Japan's territory," expressing regret.
They have also called for the training to be stopped.
