French authorities are expected to release a statement on the detention of Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov on the 26th (local time).
Paris authorities said, "Durov has been detained and will make a related statement on the 26th." Durov posted a private message from Baku, Azerbaijan on the 24th of last month.
He was arrested by French authorities at an airport outside Paris as he was boarding a plane to enter France. Early reports said he was accused of multiple offences linked to a lack of censorship on the Telegram messaging app.
It is presumed that he has been arrested on suspicion of a crime, but there has currently been no official announcement that Durov has been arrested on criminal suspicion.
Meanwhile, Telegram’s cryptocurrency, TON, coin, fell 17% on the news.
As of 10:30 a.m. on the 26th (Japan time), Toncoin was trading at $5.76 (828 yen), up 0.83% from 24 hours earlier.
