South Korean government evaluates and discusses activities as ”non-permanent member of the UN Security Council” with academic societies
On the 26th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea held a meeting with scholars from the Korean Association of United Nations Studies to evaluate the current status of South Korea's activities as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and to discuss how South Korea, as a central global nation, can contribute to international peace and security.
The members of the society exchanged opinions on the Korean Peninsula issue, as well as peacekeeping and peacebuilding, cybersecurity, climate and security, and women, peace and security, as well as other issues.
In particular, last June, South Korea, as the chair of the Security Council, held an official conference on human rights in North Korea and a Russia-North Korea bilateral meeting.
The official conference on arms trade in North Korea was held, which was a success in raising awareness of the North Korean issue in the international community. The Foreign Minister also chaired an open discussion on cybersecurity, which helped to clarify security issues related to emerging threats.
The academic members highly praised South Korea for its leadership in promoting theoretical discussions. They also said that they expected South Korea to make substantial contributions to the promotion of international peace and security during the remaining term of its term as a member of the Security Council.
He called for South Korea to continue to take a leading role in international discussions on emerging threats arising from new technological developments.
The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "Our country will faithfully carry out its role as a member of the Security Council.
"This was an opportunity to hear the opinions of experts and to strengthen communication between the government and academia regarding future activities of the Security Council," he said.
Meanwhile, South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is scheduled to hold a roundtable with scholars from the Korean Association of International Relations on the 6th of next month.
