According to Reuters on the 27th (local time), the Namibian Ministry of Environment said the previous day that "the number of animals is increasing.
"The hunt is underway in parks and protected areas that are deemed to have exceeded their grazing land and water supplies," he said. The hunt includes 83 elephants, 30 hippos, 60 buffaloes, and 10 tigers.
The total number of animals is 723, including 50 parrots, 100 wildebeests, 300 zebras, and 100 elands. A hunting company under contract with the Namibian government has already captured 157 animals, amounting to 56,800 kilograms.
The Namibian Ministry of Environment said the move was "in keeping with our constitutional obligation to use natural resources for the benefit of the Namibian people."
Namibia's food reserves were depleted by 84 percent last month, raising the possibility that as much as half the population could face severe food shortages in the coming months.
