Korean-American NASA astronaut Johnny Kim to fly to the International Space Station in March next year
Johnny Kim, a doctor and former Special Forces member, will be heading to the International Space Station (ISS) next March. The 40-year-old Korean-American has previously made a name for himself with his distinguished career.
He has attracted a lot of attention. NASA announced on its website on the 29th (local time) that Kim will be the first to carry out a mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) next year.
Kim traveled to the ISS aboard the SOYOU's MS-27 spacecraft along with Russian Federal Space Agency cosmonauts Sergey Lizhkov and Alexei Zubritsky.
They will stay on the ISS for about eight months and carry out important missions such as scientific research and experiments. Kim, who comes from a Korean immigrant family with roots in California, is from Harvard.
He received his MD from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and gained medical experience at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He also served in the U.S. Navy SEALs for 10 years.
Kim has also participated in over 10 combat missions. He was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate in 2017 and after two years of rigorous training, he will be a candidate for the Artemis ISS mission, which aims to explore the Moon and Mars.
More than 18,000 people applied to join the Artemis program, and Kim was one of just 11 to be selected.
