On the 29th, at a press conference held in the presidential office in Seoul, President Yoon said that the Prime Minister's visit to Korea by Fumio Kishida was "still uncertain."
"No decision has been made," he said, but added, "Discussions have been held between the diplomatic authorities of the two countries, and I am always open to welcoming Prime Minister Kishida to Korea." Prime Minister Kishida's visit to Korea is scheduled for the 6th of next month.
The tripartite cooperation arrangement between Japan, the United States and South Korea was fully launched at the summit held at Camp David in the United States last year.
However, the Japan-US-ROK cooperation system that the leaders of the three countries have emphasized as a diplomatic achievement will be weakened if US President Joe Biden does not run in the next presidential election.
With Ma and Prime Minister Kishida deciding not to run in the presidential election, we are facing major changes. President Yoon said at a press conference about the “sustainability” of the Japan-US-ROK cooperation system, “The (Japan-US-ROK) cooperation system is a fundamental component of the Indo-Pacific region.
"It is extremely important for regional and global economic security, and is also extremely beneficial for the three countries of South Korea, the United States and Japan," he said, expressing confidence that "it will not change even if there is a change in leadership."
President Yoon also expressed his hopes for a strong relationship between Japan and Korea, saying to the next Japanese prime minister, "Let's continue to maintain cooperation and synergy between Korea and Japan for the future."
President Yoon emphasized the continuity of the relationship between the two countries. "I have held the 11th summit with Prime Minister Kishida," he said. "We have discussed issues related to both Korea and Japan, issues between Japan and North Korea, issues in Northeast Asia, and global issues.
"We discussed security issues, supply chain issues, and other issues. With regard to global issues, we discussed what position South Korea and Japan should take together."
President Yoon's remarks are interpreted as conveying the message that "we want to continue our current relationship with Japan's next prime minister."
