Police launch investigation into contractor who left worker in his 20s unattended after he collapsed from extreme heat in South Korea
Police have launched an investigation into allegations that a worker in his 20s who had been complaining of symptoms of heatstroke died after being left outside for around an hour.
On the 31st, the Jeollanam-do National Police Agency Criminal Investigation Unit investigated a worker named A (28) who was arrested at a middle school in Chanseong-gun, Jeollanam-do.
The police received a complaint in relation to the death of a man named A, and have begun an investigation. A collapsed while installing an air conditioner in the cafeteria of a middle school in Jangseong County at around 4:40 p.m. on the 13th, and died about an hour later.
Mr. A had been working on auxiliary tasks inside a building with no air conditioning since around 1:30 p.m. after his lunch break. About three hours after he started working, he showed signs of heat stroke and eventually left the building.
In response, Mr. A's family claimed that the company did not take appropriate rescue measures for a while, including leaving Mr. A outside after he collapsed.
According to the family, the company took a photo of Mr. A lying in the flower bed at around 5:09 pm and sent it to his family with the message, "Please take him away.
Mr. A lost consciousness at around 5:10 p.m., and the company called the emergency services belatedly. After the ambulance arrived, Mr. A's temperature was too high to measure.
After the victim died, his body temperature was measured and found to be over 40 degrees. The victim's family wants those responsible for leaving him outside for an hour and causing him to die of heatstroke to be punished.
The Jangseong Police Station, which received the complaint, recently transferred the case to the South Jeolla Provincial Police Agency. The South Jeolla Provincial Police Agency, which has been in charge of the case, is currently investigating whether the measures taken by the company officials were appropriate, and whether Mr. A's death was due to a suspected crime.
The police plan to investigate the causal relationship between the two cases and, if the charges are found to be valid, to apply charges of professional negligence resulting in death.
