Two dentists indicted over Japanese high school student's death due to general anesthesia during tooth extraction - South Korean media
It has come to light that a teenager in Japan died while undergoing wisdom tooth extraction. The father of the deceased revealed in a media interview that the local internet users were shocked by the death of his son.
According to the Sankei Shimbun on the 1st, Yuta Tomikawa (then 17 years old) suddenly died on July 13th last year. At the time, he had lost his left molar wisdom tooth at a dental clinic for severely disabled people in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture.
He had undergone a tooth extraction surgery. Four months earlier, he had had his right wisdom tooth removed at the same hospital, and so he chose general anesthesia again that day because he was sensitive to the noise and pain of dental equipment.
But a problem arose. His blood oxygen saturation, which is normally over 96%, began to plummet. Medical staff diagnosed it as a simple bronchospasm.
The surgery continued. Later, the tip of the tube came loose, and oxygen was not being delivered to his lungs properly, but the medical staff did not notice until the very end. He was in a state of hypoxia, and it was thought that an accident had occurred.
He died about one month after the accident. The circumstances of this incident first came to light when Yuta's father, Isao (48), gave a media interview recently. Isao said, "The hospital told us that my son's blood oxygen saturation was
"His oxygen level was about 20 percent, and they finally called an ambulance when he was on the verge of cardiac arrest," he said, angrily adding, "His hypoxia lasted for about an hour, and I don't know why they didn't notice it sooner."
He continued, "They prioritized treatment over life," and claimed, "The more I hear about it, the more impossible it seems." He also said, "After the accident, I received a report from the hospital on a single A4 sheet of paper, but the details of the procedure were unclear.
"The operation timeline and the reasons for the mistake were not properly explained," he claimed. Isao cannot forget the month of July last year when he lost his son. He said, "Losing my son means living in hell."
"It's the same as saying, 'I hope that no one else will have to feel this way.'" He added, "Clinics are essential facilities for people with disabilities in the community, so I hope they will make serious efforts to prevent this from happening again."
Meanwhile, local police recently referred the documents to the prosecutor's office (without detention) on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death to the male dentist (55) and female anesthesiologist (34) who performed the surgery.
