Lee Jun-seok, a lawmaker from the New Reform Party, was accused of false accusation after suing people who had raised allegations of sexual favours, but was cleared of allegations (South Korea)
The prosecution has cleared New Reform Party lawmaker Lee Jun-seok of false accusations after he sued people who raised allegations of sexual favors.
According to the legal community on the 7th, the First Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on the 5th cleared Rep. Lee of the charges of false accusation.
A prosecutor explained, "After conducting supplementary investigations, including questioning a large number of people involved in the case, we determined that there was insufficient evidence to support the allegations."
The incident occurred in December 2021 when the YouTube channel "Jungyong Research Institute" revealed that Rep. Lee was arrested twice in 2013 by Kim Seong-jin, CEO of Icaist, in Daejeon.
Lee denied the allegations and sought to appoint two former reporters from the program, lawyer Kang Yong-seok and reporter Kim Sae-wi, as his namesakes under the Information and Communications Network Act.
Kim filed a lawsuit against Lee for defamation. Kim's legal representative, Kang Shin-op, then filed a lawsuit against Lee for false accusation. Kim maintained that the sexual entertainment allegations were true.
The prosecution summoned Kim and his attendant, a man named Chang, as witnesses to confirm the facts. The prosecution also reportedly questioned Rep. Lee.
Prior to this, the police had reportedly filed a petition to the prosecution in October 2022, stating that Rep. Lee had falsely accused those involved in the Institute, despite the fact that the allegations were factual.
The case was referred to the prosecutor's office for review, but the prosecutor decided not to indict.
