Fire authorities are investigating after an object believed to be a detonator for a trash balloon dropped by North Korea was found at the scene of a fire near Gimpo International Airport.
According to Yonhap News, at around 10:30 a.m. on the 9th, a package sent from North Korea was dropped from the roof of an auto parts manufacturing factory in Gochon, Gimpo City.
The factory, located about 3 kilometers from Gimpo Airport, had a fire at around 3:20 a.m. on the 5th, four days prior, and the factory was destroyed.
The fire caused damage to buildings such as the factory building, which was destroyed in the fire. No casualties were reported, but the factory claims it suffered damages worth more than 200 million won (approximately 21.3 million yen).
Fire officials, who put out the fire in an hour and 17 minutes, discovered the object while investigating the cause of the fire at the scene that day.
The object, believed to be a garbage balloon detonator, was discovered by factory workers this afternoon while they were clearing debris from the factory's roof.
The factory said the object caught fire again and was quickly put out with the use of a fire extinguisher.
The factory's operations manager, surnamed Shim (62), said, "We found paper inside the garbage balloon along with two objects believed to be detonators."
"There was a lot of airplane traffic in the sky, and there was a risk of causing enormous damage to aircraft carrying many people," he said. Fire department officials have retrieved the object believed to be an explosive device and are investigating the matter, including the military authorities.
They plan to consult with related agencies to confirm whether it is the remains of a North Korean garbage balloon. A fire department official said, "We are not sure whether the object found at the scene of the fire is a detonator for a North Korean garbage balloon.
"We are continuing to investigate the matter," he said, adding, "We cannot disclose specific details as the results of the investigation have not yet been released."
North Korea has been sending garbage balloons into the South Korean side for 17 days since May 28th of this year, and this month
Garbage balloons will be scattered for five consecutive days from the 4th to the 8th.
