South Korean prosecutors seek prison sentence for former Seoul University official on perjury charges in entrance exam cheating trial
The South Korean prosecution has sought a prison sentence for Kim, former secretary-general of the Seoul National University Center for Public Interest and Human Rights Law. Kim is the wife of Cho Kuk, former Minister of Justice and head of the Fatherland Reform Party, and former Dongwon.
He was indicted on charges of perjury in the trial of a case involving the entrance exam fraud of his daughter, in which Jeong Gyeong-sim, a professor at Yoyogi University, was allegedly involved.
The prosecution said that Kim's perjury trial, held at the Seoul Central District Court,
The prosecution asked the court to sentence him to 10 months in prison. The prosecution said, "This case has caused great social controversy. It is clear that perjury influenced the trial. Due to the serious nature of the crime,
In his final statement, Kim said, "These are people I met only once, more than 10 years ago. I don't remember everything, but I've honestly told you everything I remember."
I made my statement based on my memory of that time, but four years have passed since then. There may be some uncertainty in my statement. I would like you to understand that point as well." Kim's sentencing date is November 1st.
The hearing will be held on the 4th. In May 2020, Kim appeared as a witness in the trial of Chung's daughter, who was accused of cheating on her university entrance exam. "I attended a seminar in 2009, and my daughter, Cho, was also there," Kim said.
Min was present and instructed the students who came with Cho to move desks and act as interpreters," he testified, but was indicted for this perjury.
The prosecution argued that Cho did not attend the seminar, and that even if he had, Kim would not have given him instructions.
The court found that the evidence was false and unfounded. Whether or not Cho attended the 2009 seminar was a central issue in the case.
The prosecution accused Cho of submitting a "fake internship confirmation letter" even though he did not attend the seminar or participate in the internship.
The two men were indicted separately. In the trial of Chung, the court of first instance ruled that the female student in the seminar video was not Cho and that the internship confirmation letter was a fake.
Although the court found that the internship confirmation document was fake, it did not rule on it, saying, "Whether the woman in the video is Cho or not does not affect the decision on whether the confirmation document is fake or not."
The Supreme Court upheld the ruling, and Chung was sentenced to four years in prison. The first and second trial courts for former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk also found that the confirmation of his seminar internship at the Seoul University Public Interest Human Rights Law Center was false.
Cho was sentenced to two years in prison in the second trial, but appealed.
