New marshland discovered in DMZ, endangered species found - South Korea
The National Arboretum of the Korea Forest Service, in collaboration with the DMZ Ecological Research Institute, has discovered new species of cemeteries in the eastern part of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), including Goseong, Yanggu, and Inje.
The discovery of wetlands within the Civilian Control Line will take place in seven locations in the western region, including Gimpo and Paju, in 2021, and in Cheorwon in 2022.
This is the third such discovery, following the nine in the central region, including Cheorwon and Yeoncheon. The newly discovered marshes are located in five in Goseong, two in Yanggu, and three in Inje.
The total area is 1,005,079 square meters. It was also confirmed that a total of 711 species of plants, representing 109 families and 360 genera, are distributed in the area. These include the endangered Polygonatum maximus, the Icariso sieboldii, and the endangered Polygonatum maximus.
The area includes 20 rare plant species designated by the Korea Forest Service, such as the Chinese quince and the Japanese quince, as well as 18 plant species native to Korea.
The National Arboretum has also discovered about 60 plant communities, including a 100,000-m2 marshland (10,000 m2). Due to its location within the Civilian Control Line, the National Arboretum has decided to conduct research and management for the conservation of the marshland.
They believe that the damage caused by military training has also been found, so monitoring is necessary.
