South Korea reports over 280 million phishing emails this year alone

It has been found that more than 280 million reports of mobile phone phishing emails have been received this year alone.

According to documents received from the National Health Agency and other sources, the number of reports of phishing emails received from mobile phones from the start of this year through last month reached 280.02 million.

The next most common categories were investment, adultery, illegal lending, and driving for hire. Of the 1,200 businesses currently operating that send bulk e-mails, the number that have applied for the bulk e-mail forwarding qualification certification system introduced in June was 1,400.
The number of cases was only 89, of which only 27 were approved. As of last year, the amount of unpaid fines related to illegal phishing emails was 50.4 billion won (US$49.2 million), of which 90% was approved.
More than 50% of the debts are long-term overdue, spanning more than five years. This is because collection is difficult due to the debtors' lack of assets or unknown whereabouts.
