According to documents from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released on the 15th by Kim Ki-hyun, a member of the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee, the number of cases between 2020 and August of this year has been increasing.
A total of 278 civil servants have left the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between now and 2023. The number of mid-career resignations, which was 34 in 2020, is increasing year by year, to 53 in 2021, 63 in 2022, and 75 in 2023, and is expected to reach 100 by this year.
As of August, 53 people have left the ministry. In particular, 154 people retired from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is a working-level rank between 3rd and 6th grade, making up the majority of the total. The number of high-ranking civil servants who retired, including minister-counsel and above, also reached 102.
Of these retirees, 39 people passed the re-employment screening and moved to large companies or law firms, including 23 from large companies such as Samsung, Hyundai, and SK, and 23 from large companies such as Kim & Chang, Yulchon, and Sejong.
Eight of them have been re-employed at law firms. Rep. Kim said, "The loss of diplomatic talent will cause the basic diplomatic capabilities of our country to deteriorate. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs alone cannot train diplomats who should work hard for the national interest.
"Instead of that, we need to hasten the preparation and discussion of more proactive and effective measures at the Diet level as well."
