Drunk man carrying a Japanese sword... 50-year-old man charged in South Korea
A man was caught by police walking down the street with an unlicensed Japanese sword. The Uijeongbu Police Station in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, is conducting a safety inspection of guns, swords, explosives, etc.
On the 19th, the government announced that a man in his 50s, Mr. A, had been charged with violating the law on the management of Japanese swords. On the 14th of this month, at around 5pm, Mr. A walked off the street in Uijeongbu with a Japanese sword wrapped in plastic.
He is suspected of having attacked the Japanese sword. The sword he was carrying was 74cm long and 106cm long. A citizen who witnessed Mr. A reported to the police that "a drunk man was walking around with a Japanese sword."
The police mobilized over 50 officers to search the area around the scene, and at around 6pm, an hour after receiving the report, they arrested Mr A in a residential area in Uijeongbu-dong and took him voluntarily to a nearby area.
Mr. A reportedly stated, "A Japanese sword belonging to a deceased relative was in my mother's house, but I took it out to display in my own home."
A police official said, "(Mr. A) did not commit any acts of harm, but since even possessing a sword without reporting it is illegal, we have filed charges immediately," and revealed that "the Japanese sword has been confiscated."
Meanwhile, the Busan National Police Agency announced on the same day that it had been conducting a full inspection of swords since August this year, inspecting 2,979 of the 3,482 licensed swords (85%) and finding that 549 were unlicensed.
In particular, 281 of the collected swords were disposed of, with the majority of the swords disposed of being 250 Japanese swords (88%), as well as short swords and sheaths.
