Prime Minister Han Deok-soo issues emergency order to ”respond thoroughly to heavy rains... Deal with them without any gaps” - South Korea
Prime Minister Han Deok-soo on the 21st called on relevant ministries and local governments to thoroughly prepare for heavy rain as Typhoon Plasan, which had weakened into a tropical depression, approached the southern coast of South Korea.
The Prime Minister said, "Local governments must mobilize all administrative powers to respond to areas at risk of landslides, such as mountainous areas and steep slopes, as well as areas at risk of collapse, such as old retaining walls.
The South Korean Prime Minister said, "If damage is expected to occur, we will cooperate with the police and fire departments to preemptively evacuate residents and take measures to prevent the collapse of levees and reservoirs.
In areas likely to be affected by flood damage, such as those caused by heavy rains, public officials in charge should be stationed at all times until the heavy rains end, and thorough preparations should be made.
"We will minimize the inconvenience to residents in areas affected by heavy rain damage,"
"In order to do this, we need to mobilize all available equipment and manpower to swiftly carry out emergency restoration work and take all possible measures to support residents, while also paying attention to the safety of those working to restore facilities," he added.
The South Korean Prime Minister also posted a message on Facebook saying, "We must respond to disasters to the extent that we think it is excessive. Even if it is a little inconvenient, we must do our best to help the people."
"I ask everyone to cooperate fully," he said. "Please refrain from going out during periods when rain is concentrated, and if an evacuation order is issued, please obey it promptly. I would like to ask all local government officials, police and fire officials to refrain from going out during periods when rain is concentrated, and to obey it promptly.
I would like to offer words of encouragement to all public officials across the country who are fulfilling their duties behind the scenes, such as those mentioned above." He added, "After working during the mid-autumn celebration holiday,
I am saddened because they could not have taken time off, but as now, the lives of the people depend on us public servants. I ask that you go to work with the mindset of protecting your families.
"I ask everyone to do everything they can to ensure their own safety in the process. The government will do its utmost to ensure that the torrential rains are dealt with without any gaps until they are completely over," he added.
"I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who supported us," he emphasized.
