According to the "Current Status of Medical Students and Registrations for the Second Semester of 2012," as of the 2nd of this month, 653 students (3.3%) out of a total of 19,374 students enrolled in 40 medical schools nationwide had paid their second semester registration fees.
By type of university, in the case of the 10 national universities, only 191 students, or 3.2%, of the 5,919 medical students enrolled, registered. In the case of the 30 private universities, 13,455 medical students enrolled
Of these, 462 people paid the registration fee, which was 3.4% of the total. By university, there were nine medical schools that had not registered anyone, including two national universities and seven private universities.
The number of registered students at 20 medical schools, which is half of the total, was in the single digits. The highest registration rate was at a private university, A, where 71 out of 355 students registered, a registration rate in the 20% range.
Next was National University B, where 87 people, or 11.8%, of the 740 people enrolled. The enrollment rates for the rest of the medical schools, excluding these two, were all in the single digits.
Attendance by medical students was also low. As of July 22, the number of students attending all 40 medical schools was 495 (excluding some universities where attendance could not be recorded).
This was only 2.7% of the total 19,345 students enrolled. The Ministry of Education announced flexible management guidelines for bachelor's degrees in July this year to encourage medical students to return to classes.
A proposal to adjust the cut-off time from the current "end of the semester" to the "end of the school year" and to treat incomplete course grades as "I (incomplete) credits" and to improve the grades if the content is completed within a certain period.
However, there has been no movement for medical students to return to the university, and it has been pointed out that these measures are ineffective.
