Meteorologist predicts temperatures of 40 degrees this summer, but says winter will be minus 18 degrees (South Korea)
A South Korean meteorologist who predicted that temperatures could exceed 40 degrees this summer has now predicted that temperatures will drop to below -18 degrees this winter.
This summer, temperatures have risen to as high as 40 degrees in some areas, with tropical nights continuing right up until the mid-autumn celebration holiday, known as Chuseok.
At around 3:33 pm on the 4th of last month, the temperature in Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do, rose to 40.0 degrees. According to the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) observation records, the last time it reached 40.0 degrees was
The last time a temperature above 40.0 degrees was recorded was on August 5, 2019 (40.2 degrees in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province). Professor Kim Hye-dong of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Keimyung University told CBS Radio's Kim Hee-sik on the 23rd,
"I think this winter will be very cold. I predict it will follow a pattern somewhat similar to the winters of 2021 and 2022 recently," he said on the Yeongjung news show.
Professor Kim said, "Similar predictions are being made by overseas organizations, but as this fall ends and we enter winter, there is a very high possibility that we will transition into the La Niña phenomenon. For La Niña to occur, it will take more than usual.
The temperature of the ocean waters east of the equator needs to drop to below 0.5 degrees. However, even if that level is not reached, a La Niña-like phenomenon can occur. If that happens, it will affect South Korea, North America, and the Americas.
"There is a very high possibility that the cold wave from the Arctic will intensify toward 2021," he said. "The temperature will drop to below -18 degrees Celsius in 2021 and 2022, and in Texas, the water supply and electricity will be cut off.
"The winter that happened then is expected to be similar to this winter," he said, adding, "Long-range forecasts don't mention specific temperatures, but this winter will be very cold."
Professor Kim predicted that the heat would continue until early November. He said, "According to data from the Korea Meteorological Administration over the past 30 years, summers have become shorter and winters longer. Even in the last 10 years, there have been very few autumns that feel like autumn.
"It's almost completely gone. This year in particular, we're going to see very little autumn," he said. "Last year, the daytime temperature rose to 29 degrees even in mid-November.
The weather in November is almost summer. I mentioned that the temperature suddenly dropped after the mid-autumn celebration this year, but it was the same in November last year. The day after the temperature rose to 29 degrees, it suddenly dropped to 2
"We are very happy that the heatwave is over and the temperature has dropped a little, and autumn has arrived, but from tomorrow, the temperature will rise again by nearly 30 degrees," said Professor Kim.
"The warm weather is going to continue again. It's likely to continue until at least early November. Of course, there will be one or two cold spells in between."
