Cretaceous insect named after Korean professor; new discovery in Korean strata = Korea
A research team led by Lee Soobin, a former member of the National University of Education at Gongju, has published the results of their research into insect fossils found in nacre formed on the Korean Peninsula during the Cretaceous period 100 million years ago.
The researchers published their findings in the journal Cretaceous Research. They discovered three species of Parmeliocoleidae insects, including Parmeliocoleus mimimus (Um
enocoleus minimus, Pseudoblattapterix
weoni, Petropterix coreanensis
In particular, Seudobrattapritex wonii is morphologically different from any other Parmelocolepis insects reported so far.
The team concluded that this insect, which has a distinctive shape and is very different from any previously reported member of the Parmelocoidea.
Lee SOOBIN said, "The name of the insect, 'Woni', comes from Seong Kyu (INFINITE) Ngwang (Sungkyunkwan)
"The name was chosen after Professor Won Byung-mok of the Department of New Materials Engineering at the University of Tsukuba. We expressed our gratitude to him for the help he provided in many areas, including the use of his laboratory and equipment."
