South Korea launches AI committee chaired by president to boost GPU performance by 15 times to expand AI business

The Ministry of Science and ICT held the 1st National AI (Artificial Intelligence) Committee and announced the direction of the AI strategy. The strategy will see the ministry raise up to 2 trillion won (approximately 2 trillion yen) in funding from public and private sectors.
The government will invest 17,932,760,000 yen to establish a "National AI Computing Center." The size of GPUs (graphics processing units), which are the basis of AI competitiveness, will be increased to 2 exaflops by 2023.
The company plans to expand the number of neural processing units (NPUs) to more than 15 times the current level by 2027.
The government will aim to introduce domestically produced AI in the areas of NPUs (Nuclear Power Units, AI-dedicated processors), PIM (processing-in-memory) memory semiconductors, etc.
The government will establish a law to deal with the increase in communication traffic and electricity demand caused by AI. On the other hand, as AI develops, crimes and cybercrimes caused by deep learning will increase, so
A specialized institute to deal with this issue, the AI Safety Research Institute, will be established in November. Furthermore, the AI Basic Act is scheduled to be enacted within the year to maintain a good balance between the development of AI and its safety and reliability.
The National AI Committee, which was launched on the 26th, will be responsible for formulating and implementing the national AI strategy and is chaired by President Yoon Seok-yeol.
