「スマホいらない」ビデオ通話・ユーチューブもARメガネで…メタ「オリオン」
”No smartphone needed” video calls and YouTube with AR glasses... Meta ”Orion”
Metaplatform, the parent company of Facebook, has unveiled Orion, a glasses-like augmented reality (AR) device. The glasses are a wristband that detects neural stimulation.
Using a camera that tracks your hands and eye movements, you can "click" and "scroll" the display using just your hands. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, "Mobile Handsfree is a game changer."
Lee Computer stated, "Orion will be the next computing device after the smartphone."
Meta held its annual Developer Conference on the 25th (local time) at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California.
The Orion prototype was unveiled at the 2024 Connect 2024 conference. Zuckerberg, who took the stage to personally introduce Orion, said, "This is where we're going."
Orion, which resembles thick, black-rimmed glasses, can be used like glasses to send text messages, make video calls, watch YouTube videos, and more.
Unlike the John Pro or Meta's Quest, Orion doesn't require bulky head straps or battery packs. It uses a multitude of sensors, including two cameras that track eye movements.
It has seven cameras and users can use their hands to control the screen in front of them. Meta designed the 10 or so computer chips inside Orion to make it more energy efficient.
Orion's lenses are made from silicon carbide, which is lighter than glass and helps provide an immersive image.
"Previous attempts at AR have been headsets, goggles, headsets," Rahul Prasad, head of product management at Meta, told Bloomberg.
"Next, I want to get to glasses," he said. Meta did not reveal a release date for Orion at the event, but Bloomberg predicted it would take several years.
