This is the biggest jump among all countries currently ranked in the top 10. South Korea was ranked 10th in the Global Innovation Index in 2023, but this year it has fallen to just 10th place behind Finland, the Netherlands and Germany.
South Korea has risen four places to sixth place, overtaking Taiwan and Denmark.
In an article titled "Korea Surges In UN Innovation Index," the magazine praised Korea's rise in the global innovation index rankings.
In this article, Sacha Wunschuh Vincent, co-editor of the Global Innovation Index, said, "Korean companies are leading the smartphone, IT and semiconductor markets.
"Korea's innovation-oriented regulations and private sector support are key factors in its rise to the top," he said.
"The active R&D investment also played a part in our rise in the ranking," he said. Secretary-General Tan also cited K-POP and TV series as examples, saying, "Korea is a creative cultural powerhouse in areas other than industry and technology."
The Global Innovation Index is an annual ranking system run by the World Intellectual Property Organization since 2007 that ranks countries according to their innovation capabilities and success, and this year marks its 17th edition.
