「97歳の父、室内で喫煙するしか」…息子の書いたメモが物議を醸す=韓国
”My 97-year-old father can only smoke indoors” - note written by son sparks controversy in South Korea
Along with noise issues, indoor smoking bans are a constant problem in apartments, but a note posted by a resident of one apartment building has internet users frowning.
A photo was recently published online of a note that begins, "Hello, I'm a son who lives with my 97-year-old father."
The note read, "My father is disabled and cannot go outside, so he has no choice but to smoke indoors. I apologize for the inconvenience caused to our neighbors."
He added, "Please try to understand by putting yourself in the other person's shoes and thinking about how you would feel if they were your parents. Please be open-minded and accept this."
Internet users commented, "If they were my parents, I would make them quit smoking for their health," and "They should just quit smoking,"
"I'm sorry," "I don't think it's the right thing to say to put yourself in someone else's shoes at a time like this," and other responses were made. Some netizens were reminded of the "Christmas Tragedy."
Last month, a man named Kim (78), the defendant in the apartment fire in Dobong-gu, Seoul, which was caused by a cigarette fire on December 25 last year and resulted in 29 deaths and injuries, was sentenced to five years in prison.
According to the prosecution, Kim, who lives on the third floor of an apartment, smoked a cigarette while watching a Go game video for seven hours and left the room without completely putting out the cigarette.
The fire spread to newspapers, garbage bags, and other items in the apartment building, and then to the entire building. When the fire broke out and smoke filled the living room, Kim opened the front door and the door to his room, allowing air to flow in and causing the fire.
The fire spread, but the man escaped through the living room window without taking any measures. The man, who was the first to break out of the fire, was identified as Ms. Park (33), a resident on the fourth floor who jumped down with her seven-month-old daughter in her arms.
Two people were killed, including Mr. Lim (38), who had called the police and evacuated his family first, and 27 were injured. One resident who was receiving treatment later died in June this year, bringing the death toll to three.
The family said, "It is a little comforting that Kim received the maximum sentence, but we cannot forgive him. He has not apologized at all."
"This pain will continue until I die," he said. Kim was not satisfied with the first-instance ruling and filed an appeal on the 9th of last month.
