The two met after the ruling and opposition parties' parliamentary consultation body was in a deadlock as the government was reluctant to adjust the number of medical school admissions for the 2025 academic year. Former Chairman Woo Sik asked Prime Minister Han Deok-soo if the government would take a positive approach to the current medical chaos.
"We don't have much time left, as university entrance exams have begun and there is also the issue of medical students taking time off," said Chairman Woo Sik. "At a time like this, we need to set up a parliamentary consultative body for the ruling and opposition parties (to resolve the issue of parliamentary conflict)."
"What's important is how flexible the government is," he said. "Only if the government is flexible in its approach will the medical community respond and make a decision."
In addition, Chairman Woo Sik said, "The prerequisite for dialogue is to dispel distrust and build trust," and added, "We will continue to announce the establishment of a new medical human resources supply and demand estimation organization (recent proposal by the government)."
"If we push ahead with this unilaterally, there is a possibility of conflict," he said. Prime Minister Han Deok-soo said, "The government, in consultation with the ruling party, is also considering meeting with the medical community without preconditions or prior agendas.
"I am conveying my position that I will meet with him soon and discuss this issue frankly," he said. He continued, "Regarding the issue of increasing the number of medical school admissions, he indicated that he would stick to his current position."
Prime Minister Han Deok-soo said, "The consensus among the three specialized agencies is that we should increase the number by 10,000 by 2045," adding, "The pace (of the increase) will be decided by policy makers."
