In his policy speech on the 4th, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said regarding Japan-South Korea relations, "In the current strategic environment, it is extremely important for the interests of both Japan and South Korea that Japan and South Korea work closely together."
He continued, "Although there are difficult issues between Japan and South Korea, in anticipation of the 60th anniversary of the normalization of the border next year, I would like to continue to build on the relationship that former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida built with President Yoon Seok-yeol.
"Based on the established relationship of trust, we will make cooperation between Japan and the ROK even stronger and broader," he said, emphasizing that "Japan, the United States and the ROK will work together even more closely."
Prime Minister Ishiba, who took office on the 1st of this month, said in his Diet speech that he would continue to work to improve Japan-Korea relations under the previous Kishida administration.
"I hope that we will continue to communicate closely and work together in solidarity," Prime Minister Ishiba said in a telephone conversation with President Yoon the previous day (3rd).
