Falls 100m off cliff while assembling tent (South Korea)
A tourist camping at the top of Daedunsan Mountain in Wanju, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea, fell off a 100m cliff with his tent, resulting in a dramatic death.
On the 8th, the Jeollabuk-do Fire Department said that a man in his 30s, Mr. A, had fallen near the summit of Daejeonsan Mountain in Wanju County at around 10:02 pm the previous day.
According to a KBS report, Mr. A, who was conscious immediately after the accident, said, "I seem to have fallen from the top of the mountain. I lost consciousness for a short time."
A fire department and 44 members of the civilian mountaineering team were dispatched to rescue Mr. A, but due to the nature of nighttime rescues where visibility is limited, it was difficult to determine the location of the caller.
As they continued their nighttime operation, firefighters discovered a yellow bag and shoes believed to belong to Mr. A near the summit of Mt. Daejeon.
After descending to the bottom of the cliff and searching for Mr. A's location using GPS and other means, the police found him.
When he was found, Mr. A was entangled between the tent pole and the fabric, and his head was cut by 4cm.
Although his leg was broken, he was fully conscious. The firefighters put him on a mountain stretcher and took turns climbing the 100m high mountain again to transport him by HYERI helicopter.
The climb ended at around 5:30 a.m., seven and a half hours after the report was made. Mr. A was then taken to the hospital and treated, but was not pronounced to be in any danger of dying.
Fire authorities believe that Mr. A had climbed the mountain to go camping and was setting up a tent when he fell off the mountain along with the tent.
"It was dark and the mountain terrain was rugged, making it difficult for rescue workers to approach," a fire official said.
"The temperature dropped in the middle of the night, which made it difficult for both the rescue team and Mr. A, but we are fortunate that they were able to rescue him safely," he said.
