Deaths increase despite fewer patients visiting emergency rooms in South Korea - is this due to a lack of medical care?
In South Korea, the number of patients visiting emergency rooms has decreased slightly this year, but the number of deaths in emergency rooms has increased slightly.
According to documents received by Rep. Kim Mi-ae from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the number of patients visiting emergency rooms is expected to grow by 5.8% from 9,055,185 in 2019 to 8,532,294 (provisional) in 2023.
This year, with most of the medical residents leaving due to conflict between the medical community and the government, a provisional figure of 3,494,752 patients visited emergency rooms through June.
Although the second half of the year is still to come, the number of patients visiting emergency rooms in the first half of the year was only about 41% of the total number of patients in the entire year of last year.
If this trend continues, the total number of patients this year is expected to decrease from last year. This is due to the conflict between the medical community and the government, which has been running the emergency medical system while limiting emergency room visits for patients with minor symptoms.
This is believed to be the result of the government's request for self-restraint and for emergency medical centers to focus on treating seriously ill patients. Meanwhile, the number of patients who died in emergency rooms is expected to increase from 30,328 in 2019 to 33,300 in 2023.
The provisional figure is 574, up 10.7%. The number of deaths in emergency rooms in the first half of this year was 16,237, about half of the total number last year.
Considering that the number of patients visiting the emergency room in the first half of the year was only about 41% of the total number of patients in the entire year of last year,
The number of deaths in the emergency room appears to have increased slightly from the same period last year, a factor that may have been influenced by the medical vacuum following the mass resignation of medical residents.
The number of patients who died before arriving at the hospital (DOA) decreased by 8.4%, from 16,935 in 2019 to 15,091 last year.
The number of DOA patients in the first half of this year was 7,480, about 49% of last year's figure.
