President Yoon, who is currently visiting Laos, said he will hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of six countries - Japan, Canada, Australia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand - on the 10th and 11th (local time).
The meeting between the two leaders, scheduled for the 10th, will be the first since Prime Minister Ishiba took office on the 1st of this month. Japan and South Korea intend to continue the trend of improving relations between the two countries through this meeting.
A presidential office official said earlier, "It will be difficult to hold in-depth discussions in a short period of time at the outset, but the leaders of the two countries will look back together on the history of Japan-Korea relations over the past two years, and
"We will strive to hold this meeting where we can share our concerns about how Japan-Korea relations should repart next year, which marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations," he said.
Prime Minister Ishiba is considered a representative pro-Korea figure in Japanese politics. In response to a question about foreign policy at a press conference shortly after taking office, he said, "Our relationship with the United States is important, and so is our relationship with South Korea."
Before becoming prime minister, he also said about the comfort women issue, "We must apologize until South Korea is satisfied."
