Retaliation crimes up 78% in five years... 39 cases of retaliation murders in South Korea
It has been found that the number of reported cases of retaliation crimes has increased by about 80% in the past five years. During this period, the number of cases of retaliation murders also reached 39.
According to documents received by a ruling party lawmaker from the Ministry of Justice, the number of cases of retaliatory crimes, such as retaliatory murder and retaliatory assault, under the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specified Crimes (Act on Special Crimes) increased from 385 in 2019 to 2023.
In 2018, the number of cases increased by 78% to 686. As of the end of August this year, 500 cases of retaliation have been reported. A special retaliation crime is a crime that is committed in relation to the investigation or trial of one's own or another person's criminal case.
This refers to a case where a crime is committed in retaliation for the provision of investigative clues, statements, testimony, or materials, such as a complaint or accusation.
Over the past five years, the most common crime type reported was the crime of assault, with a total of 1,713 reported cases.
Retaliation threats accounted for 61.2% of all retaliatory crimes during the same period (2,797 cases), followed by retaliatory assaults at 20.8% (583 cases) and retaliatory injury at 12.4% (347 cases).
