South Korea's psychiatrist Yang Jae-eun's hospital takes 741 quarantine measures, the highest this year
A woman in her 30s, Ms. A, died in May at a hospital run directly by South Korean renowned psychiatrist Yang Jae-eun. The number of cases of patient isolation measures at Director Yang's hospital in the past five years has reached its highest this year.
According to documents provided by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to Democratic Party lawmaker Seo Mi-hwa on the 13th, the number of quarantine measures taken at Director Yang's hospital from January to August 18 this year was 7.
The number of cases in isolation at the hospital is expected to reach 41 in 2023 and 247 in 2022. The highest number of cases in the past five years was in 2020.
In 2019, the number of cases was 444 in 2020 and 444 in 2021. The number of compulsory measures is also expected to be at its highest this year. The number of compulsory measures taken by hospitals in the same period this year as identified by the Ministry of Health and Welfare was 118.
The year with the most enforcement actions was 2021, with 121 cases. With about two months left in the year, the number of enforcement actions is expected to exceed that of 2021.
Earlier this year in May, a woman in her 30s, Ms. A, visited the hospital run by Director Yang to receive treatment for diet pill addiction, but died 17 days after being admitted.
At around 7 p.m. the day before his death, Mr. A was isolated alone in a stable room at the hospital, and when he resisted, staff took the forced measure of tying his hands, feet, and chest to the bed for about two hours.
The autopsy results from the National Police Agency determined that the cause of death was acute pseudo-intestinal obstruction. After Mr. A's death, the family filed a police complaint against Director Yang and six other medical staff for abandonment resulting in death and professional negligence resulting in death.
Later, in an interview with the Hankyoreh, Director Yang said, "The real problem in the deaths is not the isolation or coercion, but the risk of pentamine (diethamine) poisoning. Other poisonings are also suspected."
"The forced isolation of patients is a treatment that entails some risks in order to prevent greater risks," he said. Meanwhile, Director Yang is scheduled to appear as a witness at a parliamentary audit by the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee on the 23rd.
