It has been revealed that "former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen may visit the United States within the next few weeks." American political media outlet Politico reported on the 15th, citing multiple sources.
The article quoted the story and went on to predict that "if former President Tsai were to visit the U.S., tensions between the U.S. and China would only intensify further ahead of the U.S. presidential election."
He added, "The Chinese government has previously opposed visits to the United States by former and current high-ranking Taiwanese government officials, and has been quite sensitive about U.S.-Taiwanese mutual exchanges."
Regarding this, a US administration official told the Taiwanese daily newspaper Lianhuabao that "nothing has been confirmed," and added, "Just as former President Ma Ying-jeou visited the US last September, former President Tsai Ing-wen also visited the US.
"It is possible that I will also visit the United States as a civilian."
