According to the Ministry of Justice of South Korea on the 22nd, the total number of illegal residents on Cheju Island as of the end of June this year was 11,191. They entered Jeju without a visa but did not return home, and their whereabouts are unknown.
A significant number of them are currently residing in Jeju, but some are believed to have secretly left the country for areas outside Jeju.
The number of illegal immigrants increased by 3.4% (365 people) from last year's 10,826 to 8,569 in 2022 and 9,977 in 2021.
These figures are up 30.6% (2,622 people) and 12.2% (1,219 people) from the previous two figures. The number of illegal immigrants, which had stagnated during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been on the rise again since last year.
The nationalities of the illegal immigrants were Chinese (10,412, 93%), Vietnamese (326, 2.9%), Indonesian (291, 2.6%), Filipino (239, 2.1%), and
133 people from Mongolia (1.2%), 31 people from Cambodia (0.3%), and 28 people from Laos (0.3%). Jeju Island currently provides visa-free access to foreigners from 111 countries under the Jeju Special Law.
Cheju Island operates a visa-free system that allows entry to the country without a visa. If you enter Cheju Island without a visa, you can stay for up to 30 days, but once you enter, you will be restricted from traveling to other parts of the country.
As of August this year, the number of visa-free foreign tourists who visited Jeju reached 1,315,638, exceeding one million.
Meanwhile, the controversial sight of a Chinese man has become a hot topic in Jeju Island recently. Earlier this month, a photo of a Chinese man strolling around a night market bare-chested was shared.
He has tattoos all over his body. In June, a young child defecates next to a roadside tree, and the mother was criticized for not stopping the child or cleaning up after him.
Also, on July 2nd, some Chinese tourists caused controversy by smoking and throwing cigarette butts at Seongsan Ilchulbong, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
