South Korean government delegation explains ”North Korean troop deployment” at NATO
A South Korean government delegation will visit NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium on the 28th (local time) to explain about the "dispatch of North Korean troops."
According to NATO, the South Korean delegation will attend the North Atlantic Council (NAC) meeting chaired by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the morning.
Rutte is scheduled to hold a brief press conference after the briefing. The NAC is a forum where representatives of the 32 NATO nations discuss security issues that affect the alliance and reach political decisions.
NATO is the highest decision-making body that makes decisions on military operations. On that day, NATO invited not only South Korea but also ambassadors from four Indo-Pacific countries: Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
The invitation was made in response to the need to strengthen joint responses, given that North Korea's deployment of troops to Russia would have a significant impact on Indo-Pacific security.
The meeting is being held amid speculation that North Korean forces supporting Russia are close to launching a military offensive against the Kursk Strait.
Kursk, in southwestern Russia, is an area where Ukrainian forces crossed the border and occupied part of the territory on August 6, and are currently engaged in fighting with Russian forces.
The South Korean delegation will hold talks with NATO about the trend of North Korea's troop deployment and countermeasures, and is also likely to discuss issues such as South Korea's dispatch of a monitoring team to Ukraine and support for the Ukrainian military.
The South Korean delegation will also brief the EU's PSC (Political and Security Committee) and is also planning separate meetings with Secretary General Rutte and other senior officials from NATO and the EU.
