South Korea arrests group that smuggled 300,000 people's worth of illegal drugs from the Philippines under the guise of a family trip
Police have arrested members of a drug organization that smuggled and distributed methamphetamine and other illegal drugs from the Philippines in quantities sufficient for approximately 300,000 people to be used at one time.
According to the Gangnam Police Station on the 29th, the police are investigating a case involving a man smuggling methamphetamine, ketamine and other illegal drugs into South Korea.
A total of four members of the organization, including suspect A (33), who distributed the drugs, suspect B (45), who distributed the drugs, and suspect C (29), who transported the drugs, are on suspicion of violating the Narcotics Control Act and the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, etc.
Police also arrested a shop assistant at a Gangnam entertainment venue, D (23), on suspicion of violating the Narcotics Control Act after he purchased and used methamphetamine from the group.
He reportedly turned himself in to police in September this year and is currently at home. The organization is said to have shipped 6.64 kilograms (approximately 1.2 kg) of methamphetamine from the Philippines to South Korea in four trips, enough for 300,000 people to use at the same time.
The police said the group smuggled 3.18 kilograms of methamphetamine and 803 grams of ketamine (enough for 140,000 people to use) into the city.
After receiving information that methamphetamine was hidden in 71 locations, the police seized 58 grams (1 gram each) from 58 locations.
The police recovered methamphetamine from 100,000 stores and cut off the distribution of illegal drugs. According to the police, the suspects, including A, formed an illegal drug smuggling and distribution organization under the orders of the head of the organization, who has yet to be arrested.
The organization divided up the roles of smuggling, distribution, and transportation, and then set up hideouts in Gyeonggi Province, Chungcheong Province, and Gyeongsang Province to distribute illegal drugs throughout the country.
In particular, suspect A departed the Philippines on the pretense of a family trip, received a backpack containing illegal drugs there, and brought it into Korea. Suspect B and other distributors individually wrapped the drugs and transported them.
The four smugglers and distributors, including suspect A, who was arrested, were accused of hiding the drugs in residential areas in Seoul, the metropolitan area, and Chungcheong Province, and selling them by only telling the buyers where they were.
The suspects were recruited through ads in the "Drug Store" and were not known to each other. The police plan to continue to investigate the leaders of the organization, transporters, buyers and users who have not yet been arrested.
