The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "The Foundation for Supporting Victims of Japanese Imperial Forced Mobilization announced on the 30th that it was willing to accept the government's settlement proposal regarding the former forced laborer lawsuit."
However, Lee's eldest son held a press conference in front of the Seoul Central District Court on the same day and said, "I believe that (his father) has paid the third-party settlement amount."
"I was not informed that he had accepted the proposal," he said. Following the decision of Yang Geum-deok (95) last week, Lee's acceptance of the settlement money has now resulted in the death of a former conscripted laborer.
All of the 15 surviving workers have accepted the government's settlement. However, the families of the two former forced laborers are opposed to the plan.
