South Korean military: ”North Korea completes internal preparations at Punggye-ri nuclear test site...possible 7th nuclear test”
South Korean military authorities have mentioned the possibility of North Korea conducting its seventh nuclear test, and have also confirmed that it is preparing to test-launch an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) aimed at the US.
The Defense Intelligence Agency reported this on the 30th during a parliamentary audit by the National Assembly Intelligence Committee, according to People Power Party member Lee Seong-woo, who is a member of the National Assembly Intelligence Committee and the ruling and opposition parties.
The report was made by Rep. Park Seong-won of the Democratic Party of Korea. The National Defense Intelligence Agency said, "We cannot rule out the possibility of North Korea conducting a seventh nuclear test."
"It appears that internal preparations for North Korea's nuclear test site in Punggye-ri, Kilju County, are almost complete," he said. "North Korea is trying to raise the issue of nuclear weapons around the time of the U.S. presidential election.
"Chairman Kim Jong Eun has already visited the uranium enrichment facility, and there is a possibility of launching an SLV (space launch vehicle) or ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile)," he said.
"All preparations for a nuclear test have already been completed, and there is a possibility that a nuclear test will actually be conducted using tunnel number 3 in Punggye-ri," he said.
Regarding ICBMs in particular, he said, "Preparation for TELs (mobile launchers) is complete," and, "I cannot specify the names of the locations, but TELs are being deployed in specific areas."
"Because we are well prepared, there is a possibility that a launch will be carried out to verify ICBM technology for atmospheric re-entry," he said. "The timing will be around the time of the US presidential election in November."
Regarding the North Korean military's construction of barriers around the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), he said, "We can see a trend of deploying troops in about 10 places along the entire front line."
"We are closely monitoring the possibility of a specific conflict resulting from offensive military activities on the military demarcation line," he said.
"As a result, our levitation and movement capabilities have been improved in some ways," he explained.
