Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung: ”The economy can only survive if the backstreets are alive... A government with no measures or will” = South Korea
On the 30th, Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said, "The national economy can only be strong if the backstreet economy, including small businesses, and the common people's economy are thriving, but not only do the government lack policies, it also has no interest in them.
It is truly unfortunate that it seems that way,” he said, criticizing the government. Representative Lee also spoke at the “Korean Economic Forum” held by the Democratic Party of Korea and small merchants and self-employed people at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, that afternoon.
"The economy is in a really emergency situation," Lee said. "Right now, our economy is facing structural difficulties. In particular, the regional and local economies, which are the blood and capillaries of the economy, are in a difficult position.
"The backstreet economy, the people's economy, these are areas that are mainly run by small merchants, but this is where the problem seems to be really serious," he said.
"It's a little worrying," he added. "But the government doesn't seem to have any real solutions. It doesn't seem to have any will to do anything. If there's something that's causing trouble, it's only natural for the government to come up with solutions, but that's the government's responsibility.
Yet, no one seems to care. I previously said that the real problem is incompetence and irresponsibility, but thinking about it recently, I think the biggest problem is indifference."
Lee said, "It seems like there is no interest at all. In the end, I think it's more important to encourage everyone on the ground to take an interest."
Lee said, "I believe that the economy can only thrive if the backstreets are alive, and the country can only thrive if the backstreets are alive. I also tried out a local currency, which went quite well and is now set in place.
"I don't understand why they are refusing to implement such a cost-effective policy to the very end, even though it has already been approved," he said.
Representative Lee said, "We have discussed providing coupons to help restore public welfare, but
"It has been proven statistically to be very useful, and it has also been proven by national policy research institutes, so I don't understand why people dislike it so much."
He also said, "The problem is for us ordinary people who are struggling on the front lines, and the policy should have a multi-layered effect of supporting our income, revitalizing the economy, and supporting small business owners.
"But even now, there is no response. I want everyone to speak up," he said. "Recently, I have said, 'Let's try to increase the issuance of local currencies,' but the response has not been very good.
"The core of the economy is circulation, and I often use the example of a human being. The economy is an ecosystem, but what happens next when your heart is strong? If your limbs stop receiving blood and start to rot, you will die," he said.
