EU diplomat to visit South Korea and discuss ”North Korean troop deployment”
Josep Borrell, the EU's foreign affairs and security policy adviser who will visit South Korea next week, said on the 30th (local time) that he would "use his visit to South Korea to discuss the trends of North Korean troops dispatched to Russia and measures to deal with them."
Borrell, the advised representative, said in a statement that afternoon, "The EU Intelligence Center (INTCEN) has recently reported that 'North Korean troops are on Russian territory.'
"The stationing of several thousand North Korean troops is a blatant violation of the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions," he said.
Borrell continued, "I think that visiting Japan and South Korea is the right time to discuss these worrying developments."
"This is an important opportunity," he said. "We are currently discussing with international friendly nations the issue of North Korea's dispatch of troops, including countermeasures."
According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Borrell and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol will hold a Korea-EU Strategic Dialogue in Seoul on the 4th of next month.
The meeting was established following an agreement reached at the Korea-EU summit in May last year, and the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it plans to "discuss plans to strengthen the Korea-EU strategic partnership."
The EU and South Korea have also reportedly been considering adopting a "security and defense partnership." Borrell will visit Japan on the 1st of next month prior to his visit to South Korea.
