”Musky Scent” - Musk deer on the brink of extinction due to human greed (Korea)
The musk deer, which secretes musk, a natural ingredient in the "musk scent," was designated an endangered wildlife species in November.
On the 31st, the Ministry of Environment announced that there are an estimated 50 musk deer remaining in South Korea.
The musk deer is famous for exhaling musk, which is known as a "musk scent," when males try to seduce females.
Coral is mainly used as a raw material for perfume and herbal medicine. Musk deer live in rocky areas and densely wooded areas on mountains more than 1,000 meters above sea level.
Humans have hunted them so much that they are on the brink of extinction. For a medium-to-large mammal like a musk deer to survive in the wild, there must be at least 50 of them.
Considering that the deer cannot survive in the wild, it is at high risk of extinction. Currently, the musk deer is designated as a Class 1 endangered wildlife species.
On the other hand, the musk deer is called a "living fossil" because it has the prototype of an ancient deer.
Unlike today's deer, both males and females had no antlers, and males had long tusks that extended outside their mouths. The tips of the hair around the eyes, cheeks, ears, and under the jaw were white, and white lines ran from the left and right sides of the neck to the front legs.
Its most striking external feature is that it continues on inwards. Its body length is 70-100cm and its weight is 7-15kg.
