The Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Service (DIU) said in a document released on the same day that the Russian Air Force had used at least 28 transport aircraft to attack North Korea.
The DIU also said that Russian forces had provided North Korean troops with 60mm mortars, AK-12 rifles, RPK/PKM machine guns, SVD/SVF sniper rifles, and Phoenix anti-tank rifles.
It revealed that it had provided weapons such as anti-tank missiles (ATGMs) and portable anti-tank grenade launchers (RPG-7), as well as equipment such as night vision mirrors, thermal imaging cameras, spectroscopic sights, and telescopes.
The DIU also reported that the Russian military refers to the North Korean troops as "special Buryat." Buryat people are an ethnic minority group in Russia that live in the Siberian Republic of Buryatia near Mongolia and are economically important to Russia.
Due to the difficulties and discrimination, many people join the Russian military. As members of the same Mongolian community, Buryats and Koreans look very similar.
Prior to this, the DIU said North Korea had dispatched around 12,000 troops, including 500 officers and three generals.
The National Intelligence Service also officially confirmed the dispatch of Kim Yong-bok, deputy chief of the General Staff of the North Korean state security forces, to Russia.
