Russia: ”We did not ruin our relationship with South Korea”
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharova said on the 5th (local time), "It is not Russia that has ruined our relations with South Korea."
According to the TASS and RIA Novosti news agencies, Zakharova said that
Meeting with reporters ahead of the Baliuda International Debating Club in Sochi, South Korea, he stressed, "We are not ruining our relationship with South Korea."
"Firstly, we have never preemptively imposed sanctions on South Korea," Zakharova said.
"But unfortunately, we saw South Korea following the lead of the U.S., probably under pressure," she said. "If South Korea wants stability in the region, it should respect the interests of regional powers," Zakharova said.
"We must not upset the balance between the two countries and drag the region into other conflicts," he said, warning Russia not to intervene in the Ukrainian conflict. He added, "We must maintain good neighborly relations and maintain mutual trust in accordance with international law."
"We need to develop a relationship of mutual respect," he added. Russia has recently used various channels to urge South Korea to exercise restraint.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said at a briefing on the same day, "Clearly, Kiev (Ukraine)
"The Ina administration and many European countries are trying to get more and more countries involved in the internationalization of the Ukrainian conflict," he said. "They are making efforts to get Seoul involved."
The day before, Russian Deputy Ambassador to the United States Yevstigneeva said at the Security Council, "It is regrettable that South Korea is so quickly losing its independence under U.S. pressure and putting its national interests at risk."
"In many ways, they (South Korea) have been drawn into a dangerous adventure by the United States to increase arms supplies to Kiev, which is desperate for Western weapons due to combat losses," Evstignieva said.
"This was clearly demonstrated by the fact that the Ukraine issue emerged as one of the major hot topics at the Japan-US-ROK Security Council Directors' Meeting held on October 25 in a 'Camp David' style setting.
"The United States is pursuing an aggressive policy on the Korean Peninsula while at the same time solving the problem of mobilizing anti-Russia allies," he said. "This is the true American strategy in the region."
"It says a lot about the motives of the North Korean government," he said. "We urge the South Korean side to be vigilant and not to embark on an extremely dangerous path that will have absolutely no benefits for South Korea."
