The court ruled in partial favor of the plaintiff in a lawsuit against Kang Ji Hwan seeking 4.2 billion won in damages. The court found Kang Ji Hwan liable for 3.483 billion won in damages.
However, the result was overturned on appeal. In the first instance, the court stated that the management office was only responsible for 610 million won out of the total amount.
Then, in November of last year, the 14th Civil Division of the Seoul Central District Court ruled on the 4.2 billion yen lawsuit filed by Kang Ji Hwan's former management office against Kang Ji Hwan.
In Won's lawsuit seeking damages, all claims by the former management office were dismissed. Kang Ji Hwan won the case, but the management office appealed.
The problem began on July 9, 2019. Kang Ji Hwan was a man from Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province.
After drinking with two female staff members who were outsourced to help him with his filming at his home in Opo (Iwate) City, he entered the room where they were sleeping and sexually assaulted one of them and sexually harassed the other.
Kang Ji Hwan pleaded for leniency at the final hearing, and was sentenced to two years and six months in prison with three years of probation at the sentencing hearing of the appeal court.
This incident put the TV series "Joseon Survival Story," in which Kang Ji Hwan had already filmed up to episode 12, in danger.
The production company filed a lawsuit demanding the return of a total of 6.33 billion won, including performance fees and contractual penalty fees. The court ruled that Kang Ji Hwan and the former management office should each pay 5.3 billion won.
The former management office filed an appeal. The appeal court found Kang Ji Hwan liable for 3.483 billion won in damages, and the ruling was overturned. Kang Ji Hwan was subsequently fined by the former management office.
He was forced to pay 3.4 billion won in compensation to his agency.
