South Korean government forms joint government investigation team in response to leak of national core technology case (South Korea)
The South Korean government will promote a plan to form a joint government investigative team to investigate technology leaks and conduct fast-track investigations if a case involving the leaking of core national technology occurs.
Wang Yoon-jung, third vice director of the National Security Council, hosted the second half of the 2024 general meeting of the Pan-Government Joint Response Team for Technology Leaks at the National Intelligence Service on the 6th.
The meeting was chaired by the head of the ministry and discussed such proposals. Fourteen departments involved in preventing the outflow of industrial technology, as well as intelligence and investigative agencies, participated in the meeting.
The government joint investigation team will combine the expertise of each agency to effectively respond to technology leakage crimes and
The goal is to eliminate corner cases, investigate crimes quickly, and recover criminal proceeds through thorough investigations. Through this, the government aims to prevent crimes worth 5.4 trillion won (US$5.4 billion) a year.
In addition, the conference will share the results of the operation of the Japan-US-Korea Innovative Technology Protection Network, which was established through the Japan-US-Korea High-Level Meeting held in Washington, D.C. in April, and will also discuss future promotion.
The Japan-US-Korea Innovative Technology Protection Network will review the progress of mutual response activities on a regular basis in response to specific cases, such as the indirect export of semiconductor manufacturing equipment to third countries, and will also discuss the progress of short-term measures.
They also agreed to hold a face-to-face meeting between the three countries in Japan early next year to expand the scope of cooperation and explore more advanced management measures.
In addition, the meeting shared the results of a study on the comparative study of US and Korean legal systems to advance technology protection legislation, and urged the government to quickly address urgent issues through amendments to the Industrial Technology Protection Act.
The government's joint government technology leak response team said, "In the face of the increasingly severe leak of core technology due to technological hegemony, we are determined to protect our technology without allowing even the slightest weakness.
We plan to continue our activities."
