Singer and actress IU's management office EDAM Entertainment has announced the current status of her criminal complaint.
The company will take measures to prevent the artists from receiving threats, insults, malicious spreading of false information, defamation through unfounded accusations of plagiarism, death threats, invasion of privacy, sexual harassment, obscenity, etc.
The crimes met include the dissemination of illegal content, DeepFeiQ (AI-based photo and video synthesis content), the illegal production and dissemination of synthetic content, and other illegal information distribution activities (hereinafter referred to as "illegal activities").
"We have selected serious cases that add to the burden of prosecution and have proceeded with charges. As of now, there are a total of 180 defendants, and we are continuing to file additional charges."
He added, "To date, the sentences or punishments handed down so far have been six cases of fines (old-style punishments) and one case of a conditional education.
Three cases were suspended, and one was suspended with the condition of the probation office's guidance. Of these, the charges were defamation, sexual harassment, and death threats against IU through the spreading of unfounded false facts through cyberbullying.
The crime committed by the accused in the form of a crime was so serious that the prosecution demanded a fine of 3 million won (approximately 330,000 yen), but the accused is not satisfied with this and is waiting for the results of the formal trial.
In the case of those who have been continuously harassing IU through various websites, the prosecution will determine that the suspicion of the crime is serious and will request a formal trial in court (request a formal trial) rather than a summary trial.
"The court proceedings are currently underway, and we are working to resolve the issue," the statement continued. "Around April or May 2023, some of the people who unfoundedly raised plagiarism allegations and defamed IU were involved in the investigation.
In particular, the personal information of some of those who are believed to have engaged in illegal activities using overseas servers and those who are believed to be overseas residents was also secured. Among them, a person believed to be a junior high school classmate of IU was identified.
It has been discovered that there are people who have been accused of tampering with IU, and even though related cases are ongoing, there is ongoing dissatisfaction with IU, and we are currently taking action. In addition, we are taking civil action against those who led the cases against IU.
Additional legal action, such as filing a lawsuit for damages, is currently underway, and a significant portion of the personal information of the parties involved has been obtained. The first hearing was held on July 24th at the Seoul Central District Court.
The other party was absent, but a second hearing is scheduled for December 4th," he added. "Around May 2023, a false rumor (spy theory) was spread about IU.
After the complaint was filed, the police quickly identified the suspect and completed the initial investigation. However, as additional investigations were carried out, the suspect repeatedly refused to appear before the investigating agency, gradually prolonging the investigation.
