On the 15th, Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said about the suspension of the prison sentence given in the first trial for the alleged violation of the Public Offices Election Act, "The conclusion is difficult to accept from the basic facts.
After the verdict was announced, Lee met with reporters and said, "Today's scene will also become a part of the modern history of the Republic of Korea. There are still two more court cases left in the real world.
"The court of public opinion and history is eternal," he said. "If the public also use their common sense and justice to make their own judgments, they will be able to reach a satisfactory conclusion."
Afterwards, Representative Lee left the court without answering reporters' questions, such as "What do you think about the sentence?" and "What do you think about the incitement to perjury case?"
On the same day, the 34th Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Lee, who was suspected of violating the Public Offices Election Act, to one year in prison with two years of probation.
According to the Public Offices Election Act, if a person is found guilty of publishing false information and is fined more than 1 million won (approximately 111,290 yen), he or she will be stripped of the right to run for office.
In the case of a person who has been sentenced to a fine of 1 million won or more and has not yet passed five years since the sentence became final, or who has been sentenced to a suspended sentence and has not yet passed 10 years since the sentence became final,
It stipulates that a person who has not yet passed 10 years since he/she has been sentenced and it has been determined that he/she will not carry out the sentence, or since the execution of the sentence has been completed or waived, does not have the right to vote.
Article 19 of the law stipulates that those who do not have the right to vote are ineligible to be elected, as they are considered to be 'election offenders.'
