On the 16th, lawmakers from the Democratic Party of Korea made condemning Chairman Lee Jae-myung for receiving a suspended prison sentence in the first trial the previous day for allegedly violating the Public Offices Election Act.
Park Chan-dae, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said at an emergency joint meeting of lawmakers and regional chairpersons at the National Assembly Building, "History will record yesterday as the day when the rule of law was suffocated and judicial justice collapsed.
"To sum up yesterday's ruling in one word, it punishes memory and emotion. In the court of public opinion and in the court of history, Lee was found innocent," said Floor Leader Park.
Kim Min-Seok, the supreme council member, said at the meeting, "This fight has historical significance as a fight against political prosecutors that has been going on since the late former president Roh Moo-hyun. Furthermore, whether it is impeachment or constitutional amendment,
"We must not overlook the fact that we are in the midst of a larger trend of 'regime change,' whether that be in power or out of power," Chief Spokesperson Cho Seung-rae told reporters.
However, Kim reportedly asked those in attendance to "not make hasty or hasty moves, but to have confidence in the tactical judgment of the leadership."
They said that the prosecution is actively investigating the contents of the phone calls between President Yoon Seok-yeol and Myung Tae-gyun, and the transfer of designer bags to his wife Kim Gun-hee.
The Democratic Party of Korea said it would fight to the end with Chairman Lee, arguing that the failure to sue the Democratic Party means that the voters are innocent and the voters are guilty.
They will participate in the 'Third National Action Day' rally organized by five parties. In addition to their demand for a special prosecution for Kim Kun-hee's wife during the National Action Day, they are also dissatisfied with the court's first-instance ruling against Chairman Lee.
The previous day, the court sentenced Lee, who was indicted on charges of making false statements while he was a presidential candidate (violating the Public Offices Election Act), to one year in prison with two years of probation.
