”Raising two grandchildren is too hard”... Grandmother killed granddaughter and abused grandson = Korean report

A woman in her 50s who had been raising her grandchildren alone, but who murdered her 3-year-old granddaughter and abused her 4-year-old grandson, was given a prison sentence by the court.
The victim's son, who is also the father of the child, asked for leniency, but he was unable to avoid a heavy sentence. On the 21st, the Daejeon District Court granted indictment without detention on charges of child abuse and murder.
Defendant A was sentenced to six years in prison. He was also ordered to be restricted from employment at child-related institutions for 10 years and to be placed under medical supervision. On August 12 last year, Defendant A killed his granddaughter B (3) by hitting her with a pillow at their home.
He was indicted on suspicion of abusing his granddaughter, C-chan (4), by biting her face with his teeth. Defendant A had been hospitalized and receiving outpatient treatment for schizophrenia symptoms for 15 years since 2011.
However, it was revealed that due to a sudden request from her son, she was left to raise her grandson and granddaughter alone. Initially, she thought she would only need to look after the children for a few days, but the situation changed and Defendant A became the one to take care of them.
Defendant A requested that the court take into consideration the fact that he had symptoms of schizophrenia and was in a state of physical and mental weakness at the time of the crime.
The defendant's son, who is the father of the victimized children, also informed the court that he did not want punishment for the mother.
The court said, "Various mental conditions, including schizophrenia, appear to have influenced the crime, and acknowledged that he was in a state of physical and mental weakness.
"However, the damage caused is extremely great. A heartbreaking incident has occurred, but given the seriousness of the consequences, I hope that he will receive treatment under medical supervision," he said in sentencing.
The reason was explained. Defendant A, who had been on trial without indictment, was detained in court. Prior to this, in his final statement at the closing hearing, Defendant A said, "At the time, I was not in my right mind and I made mistakes.
"I am very sorry for what I did," she said, admitting her guilt. She added, "I don't know how to apologize, and I am very sorry to my grandchildren. It was very hard to take care of them both. Please forgive me."
