South Korea holds its own ”Sado Gold Mine Memorial Ceremony”... South Korean ambassador to Japan: ”Japan and South Korea should make efforts to ensure that this painful history is remembered”
South Korean Ambassador to Japan Park Cheol-hee said on the 25th, "Both South Korea and Japan must make sincere efforts to ensure that the painful history of over 80 years ago continues to be remembered."
Ambassador Park said in the morning of the same day that a memorial service for the victims was held independently by the Korean side at the former site of the “4th Soai Dormitory,” a Korean dormitory for Koreans at the Sado Gold Mine, and that the Korean families of the deceased were in attendance.
"We will never forget the 'sacrifice' that took place afterwards," said Ambassador Park. "Today, we commemorate the Korean workers who suffered and died here at the Sado Gold Mine."
"I bow my head in deep sorrow for the souls of the Korean workers who were forcibly mobilized to the Sado Gold Mine over 80 years ago and collapsed from exhaustion due to the harsh labor.
"I would like to express my condolences and pray for the repose of his soul," he said. "I also think of the families who are toiling at the Sado Gold Mine, and offer my deepest sympathy to the surviving families who have endured days of pain and sorrow."
"Today will be a heartfelt day of mourning for all the Korean workers who suffered unimaginable pain in harsh conditions, and this memorial service will be held in memory of those who passed away," he said.
"I sincerely hope that this will bring some comfort to the hearts of the Korean workers who lost their lives," he said. The event was held separately from the memorial service held by the Sado Gold Mine Memorial Ceremony Executive Committee on the 24th.
