Lee Jae-myung found not guilty of instigating perjury in first trial; Gyeonggi Governor Kim calls it ”common sense result” - South Korean media
Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon called the acquittal of Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung in the first trial for instigating perjury a "common-sense result."
On the 25th, Governor Kim said on his social media that he was "sounding the alarm about the prosecution's separate investigation and dust-off investigation," and added, "Losers will be bullied, but winners will be unconditional.
"On the 25th, the Seoul Central District Court acquitted Lee of indictment without detention on charges of incitement to perjury.
In February 2019, Lee was accused of instigating perjury by asking Kim Jin Seo, a former secretary to the late Kim Byung-nyang, former mayor of Seongnam, to give false testimony during his own trial for violating the Public Offices Election Act.
He was indicted in October 2023. The first trial found that Lee had engaged in perjury by communicating the contents of his brief to Kim between December 22 and 24, 2018.
Governor Kim also ruled that "it is difficult to consider this as instigation," and that "there is no intention to instigate it." On the 15th, Governor Kim sentenced Representative Lee to one year in prison with two years of probation in the first instance for violating the Public Offices Election Act.
When the verdict was handed down, he said, "The decision of the judiciary is extremely regrettable," and criticized the decision, saying, "One cannot help but question whether there is common sense and fairness in the law in South Korea."
Furthermore, at a press conference held after the "Policy Agreement Ceremony for Leaping into a Comprehensive Semiconductor Powerhouse" held at the National Diet Library on the 18th,
"They are conducting a 'knock it down' type of investigation into the leader of the opposition party, and are covering up the truth about those in power. I cannot help but criticize this harshly, wondering whether this is a proper country governed by law, or whether this is a democracy."
"This is not a justification for the prosecution's investigation," he said.
